The Juggers Are Coming
Renowned screenwriter, David Webb Peoples, made his directorial debut in 1988 with The Salute of the Jugger, a post-apocalyptic sports movie starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Delroy Lindo, Joan Chen, Hugh Keays-Byrne, and Rutger Hauer. Shot in Coober Pedy by Mad Max cinematographer David Eggby, the film was a visionary and ambitious project that faced many challenges and failed to find an audience.
But the story of this film did not end there. Over the years, the film gained a cult following and inspired a global community of fans who organized events and even created a real-life sport based on the movie. However, the film itself remained elusive and unavailable in its original form.
Through extensive interviews with the cast, crew and celebrity admirers, the documentary explores the challenges and achievements of this visionary project, as well as its enduring impact and influence on cinema and culture and how one sci-fi gem inspired a new generation of outsiders to band together and form a chosen family.
