HARD AS PUCK

In the scorching heat of Western Australia, where 40+ degree days are the norm and the landscape alternates between white sandy beaches and vast stretches of red dirt, an unexpected phenomenon has taken root – Para-Ice Hockey.

Despite the incongruity of an ice sport thriving in this arid region, it has become one of the fastest-growing inclusive sports in Perth. But make no mistake, this is not your typical hockey. Players face the challenge of being strapped into one-blade sleds, propelling themselves across the ice using spiked sticks, and bracing for bone-crushing collisions against the unforgiving arena walls.

HARD AS PUCK is an observational documentary that follows the highs and lows of a squad of Western Australian Para-Ice Hockey players as they vie for a place on the Australian team.

As we follow the team through training, tryouts and competition, they must overcome physical, financial and emotional hurdles. It’s not an easy path, yet, amidst the hardships and uncertainties, the players find a second home – a community bound by their love of the sport.

For those players who make the National team, the stakes get higher and the group must overcome new and seemingly insurmountable odds, banding together to compete in the World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

To play this sport is to embrace a different definition of ‘winning’ and to recognize that success may not align with conventional expectations. The players of Para-Ice Hockey, affectionately known as the ‘Hard Pucks’, embody resilience, perseverance, and a spirit that refuses to be defeated by the challenges thrown their way. This is their story – a revealing tale of ice sports flourishing in the most unexpected of places and the indomitable spirit of those who choose to be Hard. As. Puck.
